Art Day - Friday, 5th June!

Thank you so much to all of you Parent Volunteers, who have volunteered so far.

For one day a year, we take over the school and let children explore lots of different Art activities, including music and dance, encouraging their imagination and creativity.

We were lucky to be featured on RTE’s news2day, check it out here for an idea of what is involved!

For the day to be successful we need as many parent volunteers as possible. You can help out or volunteer and lead art activities. New ideas are always welcome!

There are so many different areas to cover so whether you are a novice or pro, your help is invaluable.

NO ARTISTIC TALENT NECESSARY!

Volunteers should be available from 9.00 till 14.20 on 5th Jun 2026.

(Junior Infants’ pick up is 13.20 so we are looking at an activity to cover 13.20 to 14.20 for children of volunteers).

The Art Day Committee

Jnr NBA

In partnership with Tolka Rovers BC, our school participated in the Jr NBA program. It offers an exciting and enriching experience for the students of GETNS, dedicating a full day to developing basketball skills both on and off the court. This event was designed not only to enhance athletic abilities but also to cultivate teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth among young players. Throughout the day, students engaged in a variety of basketball drills and exercises aimed at improving fundamental skills such as dribbling, shooting, passing, and defensive techniques. Expert coaches provided hands-on instruction, ensuring that each participant received personalized attention to maximize their learning and enjoyment. Beyond physical training, the program emphasized important off-court lessons including communication, leadership through the media training session they attended. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and camaraderie as the kids embraced every activity with eagerness and determination. Their positive energy and willingness to learn made the day memorable and impactful for everyone involved. In summary, the Jr NBA program was a fantastic opportunity for GETNS students to grow their basketball skills while building character and confidence. It was a day marked by fun, learning, and meaningful connections, leaving the young athletes inspired to continue their journey both on and off the court. Below you can find some pictures of the day.

Parent Feedback on Standardised Testing

The Educational Research Centre (ERC), provider of the “Drumcondra” standardised tests, is inviting parents to complete a short anonymous survey on their knowledge of and views on standardised testing to help inform future developments.  Please take a few minutes to complete it here: https://erc.fra1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_510cVR0Vz5Q9K18

Support activisim by 2nd Level Students

Our names are Seán McDonnell and Cillian McCann and we are 3rd year students in Firhouse Educate Together Secondary School. We recently presented a project we are undertaking in Ethical Ed. on the problem of child slave labour in the chocolate industry at the Educate Together Student Conference. Some of your students and teachers may have been there. We also presented this project to teachers and parents at this year's Educate Together AGM.

Perhaps their parents could sign the petition on behalf of their children.

5th class trip to the National Gallery

On Wednesday, 5th class took a trip into the National Gallery in Merrion Square for a guided tour. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and the children asked some wonderful and thought-provoking questions.  We saw many examples of Irish art including paintings by Jack B Yeats, Harry Clarke, William Leech and much more. We finished off the trip with a visit to Merrion Square park and playground; everyone had a great day! Aoife

Realtín's Second Class have been busy diving into their exciting Under the Sea project. The class researched and discovered lots of fascinating facts about rockpools, the deep zone, coral reefs, shipwrecks and underwater volcanoes, including the amazing marine life found in each habitat.

After their research, they worked together in teams to create colourful collages of the five underwater habitats. They used a variety of materials and textures to bring their ocean scenes to life, and we think the finished pieces look fantastic!

Both 4th classes enjoyed a trip to the Dublin Literary Festival in Merrion Square last Friday. They went to a workshop about the book series "Paper Dragons" by Siobhan McDermott. The students thoroughly enjoyed learning about this fantasy novel based in China and got great tips on how to write exciting stories. Some children even got to meet the author at a book signing afterwards.  Naomi

Some fab art work this week in senior infants looking at animals in the Zoo using our knowledge of symmetry to finish the photos.  Dee

You may have seen or heard in the media about The FTD Brothers, Jordan and Cain Adams from Worcestershire, who are raising awareness and funds for Frontotemporal Dementia following the loss of their mother, Geraldine, and several members of their extended family to the illness.

After completing the London Marathon, the brothers travelled to Ireland to undertake an extraordinary challenge: running 32 marathons across all 32 counties in 32 consecutive days.

Their journey will conclude in Dublin on 28th May in Merrion Square, and their route will pass close to Glasnevin Educate Together National School. Families are warmly encouraged to come out and support them if possible.

The brothers begin running each day at 10:00am and are expected to pass the Griffith Avenue Triangle and the junction of Griffith Avenue and Saint Mobhi Road at approximately 10:25am. Please see the attached route for further details.

Pupils from Jill’s Junior Infants, Dee’s Senior Infants, and both 6th classes will be present on the day with posters and cheers of encouragement. If you would like to follow or support the challenge further, please visit theftdbrothers.com.

We wish Jordan and Cain every success in this remarkable challenge and look forward to supporting them on the day. Dee
