Science Week

This week in first class, we worked on some fun projects together as part of science week.

We have been learning all about different habitats in which animals live throughout the world; this week the pupils worked together to make some wonderful animal habitats. The pupils used shoeboxes and other materials to make dioramas to show their chosen habitat. They worked hard to make ocean, pond, polar, desert, woodland and rainforest habitats. The pupils gave impressive oral presentations to the second class pupils about their habitats, providing facts about its plants, animals and climate.

The pupils explored their sense of taste by carrying out a ‘taste-test’. They completed an investigation to figure out which part of the tongue tasted bitter, sour, sweet and salty flavours through a ‘taste test’. We learnt a lot and had lots of fun at the same time!

Finally, the pupils also made bird feeders using plastic bottles, which they decorated and filled with oats for the birds to feed on.

Live Caterpillars in 1st Class

This term in 1st class, we studied mini-beasts. As part of this, we looked at the life-cycle of a butterfly and we were lucky enough to have real caterpillars in our class which we have been caring for and watching grow and change. They started as tiny caterpillars which grew everyday as they ate and ate and ate!!! Each day they grew bigger and began to spin silk which they would, in the end, use to help build their chrysalises. As they grow bigger and bigger, they shed parts of their skin which they didn’t need anymore. They are still in their chrysalises now, slowly transforming into butterflies! When they are fully transformed, they nibble a hole in the chrysalis and emerge as beautiful butterflies! We are patiently waiting for this to happen before we go on our Summer Holidays! It’s so exciting!!20150616_090410 20150617_080754 20150617_080800 20150618_091113 20150618_09112020150619_080523 20150619_080541 20150619_080601 20150619_081036 20150619_081055 20150622_081656 20150622_081709

3-D Shapes in 1st Class

Last week in 1st Class we had great fun learning about 3-D shapes. We made 3-D Shapes out of paper templates and using straws too. We also went on a 3-D shape hunt around the community and recorded information which we then transferred into our own 3-D shape books! We had so much fun!!DSCI0079 DSCI0077 DSCI0081 DSCI0083 DSCI0075 DSCI0074 DSCI0078 DSCI0082 DSCI0073 DSCI0072 DSCI0071
