Happy Diwali

Yesterday was Diwali, the festival of light. People decorated their homes to welcome the goddess Lakshmi of wealth. Diwali started when the god Ram defeated Ravana the evil, ten headed demon. Diwali lasts for five days and on each day there is something new to do. Today people do rangoli designs and use milk to make little footprints showing that Lakshmi came into the house. Today the Lakshmi Puja also takes place. Everyone makes lots of sweets to offer to the gods and afterwards they eat them!

Indians wear lovely clothing on Diwali. Men wear kurtas and women wear saris. The woman also put Mendhi or as many people call it, Henna on their hands. People light up the house with candles and give sweets to other family and friends. Gifts are given to everyone.

The third day is known as Bhaubeigh .this day is when the brother wishes for his sisters or cousin sisters well being .The brother feeds the sister an indian sweet and gives her a gift and the sister does the same.

The people in India call friends and family to their house and they have a party. The children play with firecrackers with lots of adults supervising too. Diwali is celebrated in all parts of India. Diwali is the most famous festival in India.
