Information and Communications Technology (ICT)…
Now that your children return has returned to school you will notice each class has new interactive laptops in place thanks to Dept. of Education ICT grant and a €2000 donation from Bons Secour. These new workstations will enhance your child’s learning environment. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Eugene Grant, our main ICT support member for all his voluntary work over the last 4 years. Eugene has now left us as his daughter has started secondary school.
If interested in sharing you IT skills with this busy team please email ithelpdesk@get.ie.

Board of Management BOM update…
As we come to the end of another school year it’s always a good time to recognise the great contributions of many within our school community. We value all of this support. Of particular note:-
The committed staff who work with our children day in day out. People who generously bring their own personality and passion to our children in an effort to further whet their appetite for learning within and beyond the curriculum, within and beyond the school day.
The parents, especially those who volunteer to assist our children in a variety of ways from raising funds at the Autumn Fair, to encouraging their creativeness at Art Day, to accompanying them on school walks/tours, by maintaining our computer hardware & software, carrying out repairs in school and developing the garden to further improve their environment. Thanks also to our very active PTA for the significant time they quietly invest on all our behalf’s.
The children for their friendships and kindnesses to each other that contribute to the great atmosphere in school. You are great ambassadors for us all and it is not surprising that there are such long waiting lists of children who would love to join our school!
Our neighbours for their continued support at the Autumn Fair, for holding keys and for other financial donations (i.e. Bons Secour). We are very grateful for your support.
We wish our 6th class every success in the next stage of your lives. We celebrate your successful end of primary education. We hope you remember your friends at GET and that you keep in touch with us through future events in our school life. Perhaps some of you would consider setting up a Past Pupils Committee to maintain this contact and support each other in the years ahead?
We look forward to watching our school grow as we welcome our new Junior Infants in September. As our school develops it is important to remember why we chose Glasnevin Educate Together for our children and the importance of a ‘partnership approach’ in bringing our children through their primary education. We’re more dependent than ever on parents support and have been extremely fortunate with the level of support we’ve received to date. However, please don’t assume someone else will do what is required. Perhaps they already have over the past few years and now it’s your turn! So, whether you volunteer out of a sense of interest, duty or guilt please don’t leave it up to someone else. We’d love to hear from you. It’s ultimately in the interest of your children.

Good News from your Board of Management (BoM)
Interactive White Boards, & After School Club
We received an IT related grant earlier in the year to assist with the purchase of White Boards for each classroom. As of next week all classrooms will have their own Interactive White Board, a great achievement for our school. A big thank you to all who helped over the last two years, to raise the extra funds needed to make this happen. Based on this information it was decided at the BoM meeting in March to change the roll of our existing computer lab into a resource room and increase the number of PC’s in each classroom to 4 along with the new Interactive White Board. This new resource room is now equipped with an Interactive White Board, 5 pc’s and a colour printer. It will be available from 9.10 am to 1.30 pm each day for both the children from the ALC and small groups from each class to do project work. The After School Club will have sole use of this room from 1.30 to 2.30 pm each day. This club is a valuable resource for all parents with children in both Junior and Senior Infants. The BoM are delighted to once again to be able to give the space needed for this club to be run on our school grounds.

All the boys and girls in Junior Infants love coming to school everyday.
In the morning we have activity time when we get to try out different role play areas, sand play, maths games, art activities, small world and time on the computer. We love all the subjects we are learning and experiencing, we get to read and write stories, explore objects, sing and dance and do experiments. Very shortly we will post up some photos of what we've made and some poems we've written, we hope you will like them.

News from the Board
Policy Information
The following polices are available on our website @ www.get.ie under management/policies
• Updated Pre Enrolment & Enrolment policy ~ 1. When is the school full?:
sets an upper limit for our school pupil numbers 2. Provision for children who are adopted: when places are been offered.
• Updated Positive Behaviour policy – 1. Sanctions, extra point no.9. ‘Letter of Apology’ 2. Suspension, for clarity we now list the 3 different levels of seriousness with the Procedure, Offence and Consequence for each one.
• New policy: Critical Incidence Policy, defines how the school should deal with any critical incidence on occurrence.
Some news on our search for a new location:
We have put made a submission to the DoES (Department of Education & Science) for the old Printworks site to include one of the two proposed national schools for the Phibsboro area and stating our case for our school to be considered for this.
During the last election a number of parents in the area answered the call and asked the local candidates about our school and lack of space etc. As a result of this we got a positive response on the possible use of the old Fisheries Board buildings. Our New Schools committee is now following this up.
Unfortunately, the possibility of land being made available at the Mount Temple site has not come to fruition and this avenue is now closed.
Classroom News
Due to the small size of our current sixth classroom (which has 13 pupils), we have had to apply for an extra portacabin to house next years 6th class which will rise to approx. 27 pupils. The 4th class portacabin will be replaced by a two-storey unit.
We are hoping to carry out some alterations in the main building this autumn to increase the size of the current 3rd and 5th classrooms in order to facilitate our growing class size numbers which will be on average 27 pupils from September 2009.
Recent meeting with the Student Council
Last week I met with the 12 members of the Student Council and it was a very positive and up-beat meeting. It was great to meet with such enthusiastic students who represent the voices from Junior Infants right through to 6th class and ALC.
One of the main ideas that came out the meeting was to set up sports teams to compete with other schools such as Basketball and Tag Rugby. So hopefully in the Autumn, you’ll hear more on this theme.
On behalf of the Board we would like to thank the students, their teachers, parents and guardians for all your hard work and support throughout the school year. Enjoy the summer break and we’ll see you all on Monday August 31st.

19/01/2009 By: David Chairperson BoM | The Future of Our School... is in Your hands
| View Details | No Attachment |
Following on from the Board of Management’s AGM on the 18th November, we are now channeling our energies into campaigning for a new school as we have now run out of space on our current site which is inadequate for our needs. As a school, we want to expand to become a dual stream school, i.e. 2 classes of each year but these plans will have to be put on hold until a proper site and school are provided for by the Dept. of Education & Science DoES.
In September 2007, the DoES gave us an undertaking that they would source a 3 acre site for our school. A site was identified on Glasnevin Hill but was deemed unsuitable by The Office of Public Works when a survey was carried out earlier this year. We have in the last few weeks received a letter from the DoES stating that in the current economic climate, they are now unable to indicate as to when they will be able to purchase a site for our school.
To try and move this issue on, we have launched a letter writing campaign to lobby our local public representatives. A sample letter can be downloaded from our website at http://www.get.ie/home.asp . To be affective, we need all 161 families in the school to get their family and friends to download this letter and send it to our local public representatives. A list of local representatives is attached with the sample letter.
Our Principal Attracta, Educate Together Rep. Geraldine and I from the Board along with Gerry McKevett from Educate Together, met with local FF Representative, Minister of State & Government Chief Whip Pat Carey TD on Friday 21st November last in The Department of An Taoiseach. At this meeting we were able to explain the current situation with our school and also the fact that we still do not hold permanent recognition. We also presented a petition to the Minister, which was signed by the parent body of the school. We also met with Rosín Shorthall from The Labour Party who gave a positive contribution on the day.
We are putting together a committee to keep up the momentum. So if you feel you have some spare time and are willing to lend a hand in the future of your school please drop your name into Karen in the school office or to myself at bom@get.ie.
I will keep you updated when we have more information.

27/06/2008 By: Attracta Principal | GETNS School Garden News
| View Details | No Attachment |
GETNS School Garden News:We’re almost at the end of another year of school and are starting to plan garden projects for next September…..but more of that later. The gardening year got off to a lovely start before Christmas when every child in the school planted a spring bulb and we had a wonderful show of daffodils and tulips when March came around. Since then the children have planted strawberries, potatoes and broad beans outside. Fifth and sixth class also grew tomato plants and some herbs in their classroom. This year Fifth and Sixth class also experimented with some biological slug control, using round worms that specifically target slugs. Beer traps were set up to entice survivors out, so that they could be counted. There was a measurable drop in the slug population during the six weeks that the worms are able to survive, but those pesky slugs were soon multiplying again. Back to the drawing board!
We’re very lucky to have some plants that attract beneficial insects growing wild around the garden. Red valerian, which butterflies love, is in flower at the moment and looking beautiful. Our bog garden seems to be thriving. The tormentil (yellow flower) and bog cotton are at their best right now. We are looking forward to flowers on the bog myrtle (tiny shrub) and cross-leaved heath (a kind of heather, with flowers like little purple bells). It’s also wonderful to see that the sundew (a native, carnivorous plant) has just come back after the long winter and is presumably gobbling up insects. There are tiny, so far unidentified (watch this space) creatures living in the pond. The garden is developing into a beautiful habitat for some of our native wildlife. So far, still no takers for the nesting boxes though, but we live in hope.
We hope to attract even more insects into the garden next year by building a kind of “insect hotel” – a cosy, multi-roomed container where they can hide and survive the harsh conditions over winter. The PTA has very kindly allocated some money for the further development of the garden and we hope to buy a small cold frame, among other things. This will hopefully allow us to start planting vegetables earlier and increase the possibility of a pre-July vegetable harvest and flower show.

27/06/2008 By: David Chairperson BoM | As we come to the end of another school year…
| View Details | No Attachment |
As we come to the end of another school year, it is a good time to reflect briefly on what has been achieved over the past 6 years at Glasnevin Education Together National School.
When our school opened in 2002 it had 2 teachers with 22 pupils in 2 classes: Attracta taught Junior Infants to 1st class and John taught 2nd to 6th class.
When we open for the 2008/9 school year on 1st of September next we will have 210 children, 14 full-time teachers, 1 temporary teacher and 4 Special Needs Assistants. These children will for the first time be spread over a fully single stream, 9 classes Junior Infants to 6th class + Assisted Learning Class.
Our growth in numbers is a good reflection on the type of school we have which is democratically run, with parents actively involved in its daily life while always positively affirming the professional role of our teachers. It is now more important then ever to keep this parent/teacher interaction strong as the school grows. To date, this interaction has helped in achieving a strong school community making events like; Arts Day, Science week, the Autumn Fair and our first ever Multi-Cultural show, 'The Dragon that Ate Our School' possible.
So the message from your Board of Management to the whole school community is: Don’t wait to be asked to get involved, your involvement is needed and expected. The future of our school depends on you.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our Sports Day is organised for Monday 23rd June in Na Fianna Grounds.
There will be a different format this year. Several stations with different activities will be set up. Two teachers or a teacher and SNA will be in charge of each station. After 20 minutes of each activity, children will change and rotate to a different activity. The Sports Day will be from 10.00am to 1.00pm. All are welcome. Let’s hope the day is fine. If it’s a bad day, we’ll put it off for another day that week.
Children may not be collected at Na Fianna. We will return to the school in time for 1.30pm. Children will be picked up as normal at the school. The reason for this is safety.
The holidays organised so far for 2008 / 2009 are as follows:
• School opens on Monday 1st September 2008
• Mid Term Break: 27th October to 31st October 2008 (inclusive)
• Christmas: 24th December 2008 to 6th January 2009 (inclusive)
• 2, 3, 4 or 5 days off in February 2009 during the week of 16th to 20th February 2009 (to be decided)
• Easter: April 6th to 17th 2009 (inclusive)
• Bank Holiday: 4th May 2009
• Bank Holiday: 1st June 2009
There will a further closure of 1 day (to be decided) for School Development Planning.

Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí,
School end of year reports will be posted home by all teachers on 24th June 2008. Please send in a stamped addressed envelope for your child’s school report.
If it is necessary for you to take your child out of the school during the school day (dental, doctor, sickness etc), please sign the release book in Margaret’s office or the release book in my office. When your child returns (if it is the same day), please also sign the time of return. This is for Child Protection purposes.
In order to ensure the safety of younger siblings, at the 1.30 or 2.30pm pick up times, please discourage your child from getting up on the school railings on the way out.
At 2.30pm, for classes 1st through to 6th class, the teacher will lead the class out to the senior yard. We respectfully request that parents wait in that yard for their children (that is behind the white wooden gate). This is to ensure the safety of children at pick up times. 1st class will exit through the black door onto that yard.
Please do not engage the teacher in conversation after 9.10am. The teacher is responsible for the safety, supervision and education of all the children in the class. The Department of Education and Science have laid down strict guidelines with regard to the amount of time allotted to each of the 12 subjects on the Revised Primary Curriculum. Teachers are accountable for the amount of time they spend on each subject. Interruptions after 9.10am cannot be tolerated, as children’s attention is disrupted and this interferes with the whole flow of the lesson. If you wish to have a discussion at length with the teacher, please make an appointment with him or her. Thank you for your co-operation with this.
We are all looking forward to Art Day on Thursday 19th June 2008 and hope that the weather will be fine for us all. Thank you to the parents who have agreed to supply the various food stuffs on the day.
There is an Umbrella Action Day against Climate Change organised for Martello Tower, Sandymount Strand on Sunday June 15th 2008at 3.00pm. Poster is displayed on the school noticeboard.
Children have access to the ‘club’ in the yard every day. This is an area where play equipment is used by them supervised by a Special Needs Assistants. Two different children from each class are chosen on a rota basis by each teacher. Entry to the club is via a ‘GET Club Voucher’. This is proving very popular with the children, we are glad to report.
The Parent Teacher Association are preparing the Summer Newsletter. If you have any photos of the Multi-Cultural show and the UK school visit, please e-mail them to getpta@yahoo.ie
NTL are doing works in the pedestrian access between Boithrin Mobhi and Church Avenue. They have asked that parents be aware of the dangers involved. I’ve spoken to all the children on this matter. NTL have also requested that parents not park on Church Avenue tomorrow and all next week.

Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí
Congratulations to all the boys and girls who took part in the Field Events in Santry on Wednesday 4th June. We won 4 medals. Charlie won a gold medal in the shot putt event, while Megan won silver for the same event. Fianait won a silver medal in both the under 11 hurdles and under 12 long jump. Hard luck story of the day was Tess who slipped at the start of the hurdles final and missed out on a bronze medal by centimetres after a great battle to recover. Honourable mention goes to Kieran who came 4th in the long jump, Paula 6th in Long distance, Fianait 5th in Long distance and Isaac who came 5th in the Hurdles. Artur pulled up with a stitch.
We collected our Discover Primary Science Award in Croke Park on Wednesday also. Emma, Matt, David and Peter had a great celebratory day at the venue.
In order to have a plant stall at the Autumn Fair, we have to prepare early. So while you are gardening, could you plant cutting, divide your plants and/or bulbs, collect seeds, grow plants from seeds etc. Alternatively would you have some spare pots (big or small) or compost to donate. Please contact Isabelle at 087 2186001. Labels are essential, pictures are welcome.
The Green School Committee have now focused on a ‘Switch Off Campaign’ in the school. They are reminding us to conserve electricity. We are also dwelling on saving on our water consumption.
Children in Junior and Senior Infants will be going on their school trip to Newgrange Farm on Thursday 12th June. Lets hope the weather is good for them all.
We look forward to the Track Events in Santry on Wednesday 18th June.
Don’t forget Art Day 19th June. We are delighted to announce that the school will receive a €500 grant from Dublin City Council for this annual event. All are welcome for the whole day. Please see letter overleaf.
Our summer Newsletter is being prepared at present. If parents would like to include something, please e-mail Fiona and Marie-Georges at fiona@revolutionaries.ie or mgt@nostranslation.com

Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí
We are delighted to inform you that our school has received a Special Merit Award for Active School Week. The framed award is on display in ALC. As well as this the school received €100 to purchase PE equipment. Congratulations to all the boys and girls, teachers and staff who put in such tremendous efforts during this week. You, as parents also contributed to this with the letters of commendation you sent in to us. Well done.
On Wednesday 4th June, Roisin and myself and pupils David, Ben, Tess and Matt will be attending Croke Park for the Awards Ceremony for Discover Primary Science Award, which we received again this year. Well done boys and girls.
School reopens as usual on Tuesday 3rd June. We are closing early on Wednesday 4th June at 1.15pm for a Staff Meeting.
Congratulations to Ali in 4th class who received The Rainbow Swimming Award (25 metres). Well done Ali.
Children who have been selected to take part in Santry Field events will go to Santry Stadium from the school on Wednesday 4th June. Good luck boys and girls.
We had a very informative talk for parents from Mary Crosby of the National Parents Council on Internet Safety for children on Monday 26th May. Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí
Thank you all very much for your generous contributions to our Envelope Day. So far 98 envelopes have been returned and the amount received is €8,330. If you haven’t as yet returned your envelope please do so.
Our Multi-Cultural show is on Friday 16th May and children need to be in the hall at 7pm.
- Parents of Junior and Senior Infants will need to sit with their children as the children will want to know where to return to after their item.
- Pupils in 1st and 2nd class will need to go on stage straight away when they arrive.
- Pupils in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes will be allocated seats at the front of the audience to watch the first half (not sitting with their parents).
We would ask for your co-operation in this as it will facilitate the easy flow of pupils on and off the stage at their various times.
We have approximately 20 tickets left. If you haven’t as yet purchased your tickets, please let us know if you require one on the night. Please be aware that if you have any difficulties regarding the finance involved, please let Attracta know on a confidential basis.
This Saturday 17th May we are carrying out some small jobs around the school and need your help. The jobs hoped to get completed are: Removal of internal black gate and railing, move white wooden double gates, install new benches in JI class, power hose mats and some other small jobs if time allows. We will be at the school from 11am to 3pm so please try and drop in during this time if free.
We have an array of children’s clothing in a lost property area in the Boys toilets (main building). Please look through these if you have mislaid some items. We will be disposing of this clothing in 2 weeks time.
There were 2 occasions very recently where younger siblings of pupils had very near accidents playing on the ramp. Please be aware that very young children need your close supervision while you are waiting in the yard.

Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí
We are preparing avidly for our Multi Cultural show on Friday 16th May 2008. We are sure that all the pupils in the school will participate in this event. We would need to know in advance if any child is not available to take part on the night. This is because of the preparation involved with young children regarding where people have to stand on the stage, who they are behind etc. So please let us know if your child will not take part in the show on 16th May 08 at 7.30pm.
Anyone wishing to have an advertisement placed in the Show Programme is reminded that Friday is the closing date for receipt of copy, artwork and payments.
Please see attached form for tickets for the show.
Thank you all for your envelopes returned and please return same if you haven’t already.
Children who come to school on scooters are to put the scooters behind Senior Infants portacabin and close the gate each day. Pupils are to walk with scooters while on school property.
Bicycles are to be parked and locked over at an area beside the Red Hut as and from tomorrow. This area is out of bounds for playground time. This will ensure the safety of children and indeed the security of the bicycles also.
Enjoy the fine weather.

Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí
We are delighted to have won the Schools Quiz organised by the National Parents Council last Saturday. 36 teams participated and it is a great honour for our school to have achieved such a high standard on our first outing. Well done to John and Clare who prepared the teams very well. Thank you also to all the parents who attended the event. Well done to the boys and girls in 4th, 5th and 6th classes!!
Our Active School Week went very well and our application for an Award (hopefully!) has gone into the Department together with parents’ comments. We were delighted so many of you took the time and trouble to send us in letters on the week. We are in the process of setting up a 6 weeks course in Rugby for some of the senior classes.
Pupils in 6th class will receive a seminar on R.S.E in conjunction with Glasnevin National School on Monday 9th June.
Art Day is definitely arranged now for Thursday 19th June.
Graduation Ceremony for 6th class pupils (16 this year, our biggest number yet!) is on Tuesday 24th June.
Each family will have received a pink letter and envelope yesterday regarding an Envelope Day we are holding on next Thursday 24th April. This is for much needed funds for the school. Please return the envelope (with or without donation) to your child’s teacher before Wednesday 30th April. Our School Walk raised €4,141. Thank you very much for your continued support.
We were very surprised and delighted today to find that the Cumann na mBunscoil Athletics Poster for Schools includes very happy pictures of our pupils who competed in Santry last year, Emma, Catherine, Charlie and Tess. It is on display in the ALC window.
A secondary school is proposed by Dublin City Council in the Phibsboro Local Area Plan (Mountjoy site). A group was formed (of parents from Dublin 7, North Dublin National School Project and Glasnevin Educate Together) to make a submission that this school be an Educate Together Secondary school. Educate Together will also be making a submission, but it is important that local parents get involved. If you would like to support this plan you should e-mail your comments to planning@dublincity.ie before the deadline for public submissions which is April 22nd. The planning is at a very early stage and we will keep you informed of any progress. If anyone would like to get involved in a group to help the process, please call Aisling Doyle on 085 1471105.

14/03/2008 By: Attracta Principal | GETNS School Garden News
| View Details | No Attachment |
GETNS School Garden News: Spring has finally sprung in our school garden! Last term, every child in the school planted a spring bulb and they are coming into flower at the moment. As we come to the end of this term though, things are starting to get really busy in the garden. The children plan to sow a range of seeds in the raised beds including flowers to attract butterflies and beneficial insects and a range of vegetables. This year they’re going to grow some old favourites like carrots, peas, broad beans, tomatoes, kohl rabi, salad leaves and Swiss chard, which all grew very successfully last year. They’re also going to try some new crops including coriander, basil, dill, chervil and strawberries.
Our bog garden has now knitted itself together nicely and is producing some wonderful plants. We hope to identify all the wild plants it contains, with the help of the children, as part of an ongoing project. We will be installing a pump in April and releasing some small colourful fish too.
Of course, we’re not the only ones who enjoy wonderful fresh produce – slugs and snails are also very enthusiastic consumers, so the children will be trying out some organic methods of slug control – traditional beer traps and a newer approach, which uses nematodes (these worms will specifically attack slugs, leaving other creatures, such as birds, unharmed). On the subject of birds, we haven’t had any new residents in our nest boxes, but we are continuing to leave food for them, so maybe in the future they’ll consider us when they’re house-hunting. Fingers crossed!
The space at the rear of 3rd and 4th classrooms could do with some cheering up so we will be looking at extending the garden into this space with some bamboo and grass plants along the walkway before Summer time. We also hope to get a small cold frame in the next month or so which would be a great help in raising plants from seed.
So watch out for the gardening dates in your Thursday Newsletter

12/03/2008 By: David Chairperson BoM | First 100 days of the new Board of Management (BoM)
| View Details | No Attachment |
With the first 100 days of the new Board of Management (BoM) now complete it is a good time to update you all about one of the aims of the Board. This is to improve the general communication amongst the school community. To put it simply; ‘Relay as much information about the school, to the whole school community’.
Currently, school news is posted two ways; 1. Advertising on the four notice boards in the small yard - these four boards are Educate Together, BoM, PTA and General News, and 2. Notices sent home in children’s school bags. The percentage of parents who view school news on the boards is quite small compared to the parent body as a whole. One reason for this is that parents of older children tend to drop off their children outside the school thus not coming into the school yard. The school bag works well but not everybody sees these notices.
We are now beginning to post this information in a third way; The school website - www.get.ie Using a website is the modern way to communicate and can be accessed by a large number of parents and help increase the overall reach of school news. Currently on the website is the Thursday Newsletter, BoM minutes and upcoming events/news items. The BoM have agreed to update one of the Middle Management, Post of Responsibility rolls to include updating this website on a weekly basic. This should help keep the content current and fresh. The school website also contains pictures of past events, School Newsletters, contact and information links to relevant sites.
In conjunction with updating the website we are looking at ways of using SMS messaging to direct parents to new information once posted on the website. This could also be used to relay timely information about school alerts such as closing days etc. You will be asked if you wish to be included in this trial over the coming months.

25/02/2008 By: Attracta Principal | Stay Safe Program meeting for all Parents and Guardians
| View Details | No Attachment |
07.02.08
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It is the policy of this school to teach the Stay Safe programme to selected classes each year. The aim of the Stay Safe programme is to teach children personal safety skills so they can look after themselves in situations which could be upsetting or dangerous. It deals initially with common situations which most children will experience at some stage or other, e.g. getting lost or bullied. The programme also teaches children the safety skills necessary to protect themselves from physical or sexual abuse. Essentially the programme teaches children to tell a trusted adult about any problems they may have.
The Stay Safe programme is a joint initiative between Departments of Health and Education and has been endorsed by all the partners in Education. Co-operation between parents and teachers is essential to the success of this programme.
It is important that parents are aware of the content of the Stay Safe lessons and are able to discuss the lessons with their children. To make this possible, a meeting has been arranged at which the programme will be explained in detail.
The meeting will take place on Monday 25th February at 8pm to 9pm.
We look forward to seeing you.
Yours sincerely
Attracta Hayden

Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí
We have now started a ‘club’ at yard times. Every day, 8 different pupils will avail of the equipment (basketball, hoola hoops, rings stilts etc) in the club, which is behind the Principal’s office.
Educate Together are holding a General Members Meeting on ‘1st March 2008, at The Clarion Hotel. Notices are on the notice board regarding this meeting.
The minutes of the ‘Parent Teacher Association Committee are also on the notice board. Attracta and David met with Carl and Angelique from the P.T.A. on 13th February. We have now agreed that the towels will be changed daily in the school. The parents have very kindly agreed on a rota to wash and dry the towels. This is very helpful to the school.
‘Next Monday night 25th February, at 8.00pm there will be a very important talk by Barbara O’Neill for ‘parents on the Stay Safe Programme. This will finish at 9pm. She will give a talk to ‘Board members from 7pm to 8pm also.
There is again an outbreak of ‘headlice in the school and we want parents to be aware of this.
Two authors will visit the school to enthuse the children about writing and reading. June Considine visits on Thursday 6th March and ‘Dermot Bolger is here on Friday 7th March. We are very privileged to have access to such well renowned authors.
The children in Senior Infants were presented with ‘Mighty Mouth Certificates last week. They now know all about how sugary foods damage their teeth. We also found out that most breakfast cereal bars have very high sugar content and are not suitable for children’s lunches.
Dublin Institute of Technology have an Open Day for ‘Music on Saturday 8th March at D.I.T. Rathmines Road from 11am to 3pm. Please see notice board.
‘The National Parents Council are organising a quiz for 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils on Saturday 12th April in St. Brigids G.A.A. club, Russell Park, Navan Road, Dublin 15. We will enter 2 teams of 4 children in each. So let the ‘Masterminds get ready!!
Children in 4th, 5th and 6th classes will attend the ‘ ‘Fascination of Light’ Exhibition in Kevin Street Dublin Institute of Technology on Friday 4th April 2008.
‘Parents please note that if you wish to ‘speak to the teacher at length, please make an appointment rather than trying to conduct a conversation in the classroom, when the teacher cannot give you his or her undivided attention. An appointment may be made for you and the teacher will be free to chat to you in a relaxed manner.
‘The school walk is on Wednesday 27th February at 11.00am. All parents are very welcome to walk with us to Botanic Gardens. There will be a raffle for a large Easter Egg and Bunny afterwards.

Dear Parents and Guardians/ A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí,
We are all delighted with the eventual arrival of our new classroom and Principal's office. It will be another week or so before the rooms are ready.
So far, we have received very positive comments about the free flow of people that is allowed by only opening the door nearer to the Ballymun Road.
The pupils from 4th class took part in a lesson on the environment (Crann) Tree Activities in the Botanic Gardens on Tuesday 29th January. This was facilitated by Dale Threadwell of RTE (The Den) fame.
A paired reading programme has commenced between Senior Infants and 4th class. This is very beneficial to the emerging readers as well as the older children who build on their confidence.
The Principal of Newport School in the UK (Steve Ashton) is visiting the school next week in order to discuss arrangements regarding the visit of their pupils which is proposed to be Wednesday 21st May to Friday 23rd May.
A school walk is planned for Wednesday 27th February 2008. Walk Cards will be given to the pupils beforehand. This is a worthy fundraiser for the school.
There is no need to ring the school when your child is absent. This is unnecessary and is wasting your time and the staff's time. However, when your child returns after an absence, you must by law, provide a note for the teacher giving the dates of absences and the reasons.

22/01/2008 By: Sorcha Junior Infants | Today the Junior Infants children will begin reading their Sunny Street stories at home.
| View Details | No Attachment |
Dear Parents,
Today the children will begin reading their Sunny Street stories at home. As the other letter explains there is text for a grown up to read and text for the child to read.
I have inserted comment sheets into the books. There is no need to read the whole story in one go, it should be read as an adult would read a novel, as much as the child is interested in for one night, then book marked for the next reading session.
Please write the page numbers covered in the “title” section of the comment card, a short comment on how your child got on and your signature.
Whether your child wants to read a page or the whole book the idea is that the activity will be fun. Don’t worry if your child can’t remember a word, say it for them, point out the initial sound and they will remember with practice.
Here are some ideas for discussion after reading:
1. Reacting to the story:
Ask questions about what happened – why do you think Lucy is Late? How did she get ready? Is this a real monster? How do you know? Etc
2. Reflecting on the story:
How would Molly feel if everyone was late?
Which was your favourite page? Why?
Why is “Boo” written in large letters? Etc
3. Retelling the story
Tell the story in sequence.
Tell the story from Lucy’s perspective, e.g. “My name is Lucy….”
4. Personalisation
Discuss the children’s own birthday parties
Were you ever late for a party? Why?
Did you ever dress up? Etc
Best of luck,
Sorcha

15. Sean informed the meeting that he had telephoned Paul Rowe in relation to the Proposal by Educate Together to start a Secondary school and whether the site in Ballymum was being looked at and would there also be a primary school include on the site. Paul Rowe said that Ballymum was one of the sites being looked at but no decision was yet made, more then likely there would be a primary school on the same site.

24/10/2007 By: Attracta Principal | We had a very successful Anti Bullying Week from 1st October to 5th October.

Children were made aware of types of bullying that occurs in schools at an assembly. Their co operation was requested by the staff. It was explained to them that they themselves will know of incidents of a bullying nature happening. Calling names, isolating people, hitting, kicking, taunting, leaving people out of games, were all mentioned as behaviour which we need information on from pupils. This is a TELLING SCHOOL. that is totally different to telling tales to get people into trouble. The children in this school are very aware that they are able to help the teachers and staff to deal with bullying behaviour by giving information that is true and correct. They realise that they are helping the victims of bullying in this way as well as the perpetrators of the behaviour who also need help and support.

We have made a major investment in Information Technology with the upgrading of classroom facilities and the establishment of a dedicated computer laboratory . This was facilitated by a very active group of parents with IT skills who volunteered their time and expertise to assist us.
Parents and staff have organised several extra-curricular activities for the children including music, arts and crafts, knitting, chess,French and Basketball.
We have an inclusion programme for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. This enables the pupils to be integrated into mainstream classes. Children from mainstream classes also attend classes in the A.L.C. for reverse integration.
1-- Paired Reading
Clare (5th and 6th) and Tracy's (1st) classes now come together regularly for paired reading. The older children listen to the younger ones reading and sometimes vice versa. This has been very successful so far. Thanks to all involved.
2-- Dental Health
After a series of lessons about looking after our teeth, the Senior Infant class had a visit from a local dental hygienist. This is part of an initiative intended to prove the necessity for such intervention, early on in a child's development. The school was also given some additional resources aimed at educating all classes on dental care.
3-- Visitors
Visitors to the school include An Garda Siochàna (safety), a member of Dog Trust (pet care) and the Science Bus from D.C.U. An Taisce,
Dublin City Council (Green Flag Initiative)Fire Brigade (Instuctional Tour).
4-- Seachtain na Gaeilge
We run a very successful Seachtain na Gaeilge and Tree Week every year.
5-- Active School Awards (Teacher Education Section of D.E.S. and Sports Council)
We have received this award, which is granted to schools that provide an active school day for their pupils for a week. This is designed to raise awareness of the value and importance of Physical Education in Primary schools.
Healthy Lunch Policy
We have received certification From The Health Service Executive that our School Lunch Policy is in accordance with The Department of Health and Children's "Food and Nutrition Fuidelines for Primary Schools" we are very grateful to the parents and children who are so supportive of this policy.
6-- Students Council
We have set up a Students' Council. The senior pupils who are members of the Council are LOUIE (Junior and Senior Infants), ENYA(1st,2nd and ALC),CATHERINE(3rd),RAY(4th),CONOR(5th),CIAN and SADHBH(6th), CHARLIE and JAMIE(Record Keeper/Secretary).Thes pupils wear badges to denote their status in the school. They also visit the class they represent each week to discuss any issues which may arise from the pupils in the various classes. Topics which arise from the pupils in this way are then brought to our Staff Meetings by the 5th and 6th class teacher, Clare. The parent who has been very helpful in the set up of the council is Cheryl. Thank you to you all.
7-- Stay Safe and R.S.E.
All classes have now completed the Stay Safe Programme and most classes are in the process of Relationship and Sexuality Education.
8-- Thursday Letter
News of the school activities are relayed to parents each Thursday .
Green Flag
Our 3rd and 4th class teacher has been very busy this year and last year in her efforts to obtain this award for the school. we have installed 4 bins in every classroom for plastic, fruit, paper and general waste. The pupils have conducted research on how well we are taking care of our environment by disposing of waste properly. We have a Compst Bin in our garden area. Pupils monitor our waste production on a class by class basis. We have held a Whole School Assembly in the yard to celebrate our success in all we have achieved to date in this initiative. We had a wonderful morning showcasing our achievements.Parents were present and pupils composed raps, songs, poems, mimes and jingles. Artwork was displayed. We were very fortunate to have had three musicians present on the day who sang a number of songs for us all
KNEX Challenge
Pupils from 4th and 5th classes took part in this Scientifically Challenging problem solving exercise. Two boys got through to the next stage Brian and Conor. Well Done Boys.
9-- Kidsmart Computer
We were successful in being awarded a Kidsmart Computer from I.B.M. This is installed in Niamh's class and it is a joy to watch the children learning at this learning station.
10-- Support Group for Lone Parents
Parents Alone Support Service Ltd is a local support network for lone parents. If interested please contact Bernie any weekday morning at 8641964. A notice regarding this group is on the notice board.

We have moved into the main building on the site. There are three classrooms at ground level, which are now fully occupied by First Class and the multi class grouping of 4th, 5th and 6th class. The Resource and Language Support Teacher share one of these rooms. We have plans to have a networked computer room in the lower ground floor of this building.
We have children enrolled here from several countries as well as Ireland. There are pupils here from the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, India, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany, Russia, the Philippines and Estonia.
As well as using the playground for Physical Education, we also have the use of Na Fianna grounds. This is a wonderful resource to have and we are using it to the full, as the weather has been very favourable since we returned after the summer holidays.
We are deeply indebted to the Probation Service Community Workers who have brightened up the school grounds considerably during the summer holidays. This work will be ongoing and we hope to engage them to erect partitions in one of the rooms in the main building later in the year. They have also transformed our little garden at the side of the 2nd and 3rd class classroom.
During the month of September 2005 we facilitated 3 Student Teachers to complete their training in three different Teacher Training Colleges, St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, Marino College, Griffith Avenue and Church Of Ireland College, Rathmines. Their teaching was inspected by the authorities in these colleges, who were very appreciative of our school providing this facility to their students.
World Refugee Day - Mon 20th June
To celebrate 'World Refugee Day', we had a visitor from SPIRASI (Spiritan Asylum Services Initiative). Her name was Jenny Polden and she works with Refugees and Asylum Seekers. Jenny spoke with Senior Infants, First and Second class together and then Third to Sixth classes.
The children had prepared some questions for Jenny, for example, "What is it like to be a refugee?", "Why do refugees have to leave some people behind?" and "Why are refugees threatened in their own countries?" First, Jenny answered the children's questions and then she showed them some posters, for example one of Einstein, who was a refugee. The talk was interesting and informative and the children responded very well. Jenny was very impressed with some of the children's comments. Adam form Second class said, "We should are for refugees because they are sad because they have lost their homes."
Thank you very much Jenny and to all the children!
Congratulations to Chris Walshe in the long jump and Martin Dvoracek in the high jump who won medals at Santry Sports Cuman Na Mbunscoil today.
Congratulations to Ella O'Reilly O'Grady aged 5 who won first prize in the 6 years and under category in this years, Texaco Children's Art Competition. This is a huge achievement as there were over 30, 000 applicants. Well done Ella!!!
If you'd like to see Ella's 'work of art', it will be exhibited in Dublin Castle, from the 6th June, for two weeks, along with one hundred other entries to the competition.
THE NEW JUNIOR INFANTS MEETING WITH THEIR NEW TEACHER TAKES PLACE ON THURSDAY 16TH JUNE AT 1.45 P.M. UNTIL 2.15 P.M. WE WILL BE WRITING TO ALL NEW PARENTS ABOUT THIS AND SENDING THEM NAME TAGS FOR THE DAY.

WELCOME TO ALL
We want to extend a very warm welcome to all our new staff members.
Joe Fogarty is now our 1st, 2nd and 3rd class teacher, we know Joe well as he worked as our part time resource teacher last year. Susan Corrigan is our new teacher in the Assisted Learning Class. Róisín Conlon is our new senior infant teacher. Mary Power is our new Special Needs Assistant in the ALC.Valerie Doyle is our new Special Needs Assistant working in the mainstream school. Ann Joyce is the part time Resource teacher and without her the staff would not be fed ! She is great for bringing in the tarts and buns etc. We hope that they all enjoy working in GETNS and we know that we have a very committed and dedicated team here in the school who give of their best for the children and for that we are very grateful.
COMPUTERS
We now have 2 computers in every classroom which can be networked and all except two rooms have a printer. We do need the assistance of any parent who could help with setting up a computer we have in the Resource Room. RADIO PROGRAMME We were very proud to hear five pupils from the school read from their favourite books and discuss the authors, illustrators, characterisations, plots and settings. Some of them read poetry and commented on it and others read and discussed their own creative writing. They represented the school very well. A big Thank You to Sarah, Adam, Enya, Tess and Cian and Joe Fogarty, our teacher who organised the whole event which featured on Near FM recently.
PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION
We are delighted to have our PTA in full flight this year. The Chairperson Cheryl Marling is the person to contact should you wish to join the PTA.
GLASNEVIN NATIONAL SCHOOL
This school still occupies the top floor of the main building. Their own new building appears very near completion now so we hope to be in a position to move into the main building in September 2005. We will let you know of all developments in this area.
SCHOOL PLANNING DEVELOPMENT
Attracta had a meeting with DES School Planning facilitator Mary O Leary on 27th September, 2004. Our planning is at a very optimum level considering the pressures on a developing school with a teaching principal. We are obliged to close the school for 6 days for this planning and curricular development. We have already closed for 3 days for Music, PE and school based planning. As soon as we know the dates of the further 3 days we have to close we will let you know.
